Dr. Nordwall at Clinic

December 2020

Dear Clients and Friends of the Chicago Cat Clinic,

It has been my distinct privilege to work at the Chicago Cat Clinic for going on 31 years – first as an associate veterinarian, and then as Medical Director and owner of the practice. It has been an incredible journey made most amazing by my wonderful and kind staff, our feline patients and you, our clients and friends.

It has long been my dream to not do the same thing my entire career and to make a change earlier than expected in our society. I am making this change because I want to, not because I have to. Especially, in these strange times, I did not want anyone to think it was pandemic related or any other cause for worry. Thankfully, I am healthy and looking forward to whatever is next. I am expecting to wrap things up in February 2021, but after I break, I may help out until the end of May 2021. I had hoped to have an open house or party, but that is not looking possible at the moment, so we will see.

Dr. Olenych will succeed me as Medical Director and Dr. Li will continue as an associate veterinarian. These two doctors have been my colleagues and friends for many years and I am proud of their excellent medical skill and care, and for their kind spirits. We are looking for a third doctor as well. It is important to me that we maintain our small clinic, family feel along with our progressive and high levels of care.

The pandemic has made this last year of my career a bit sad, as I had hoped to have opportunities to tell you all in person about the upcoming changes at your regular appointments. I wanted to make sure you knew who the other doctors are if you have not yet met them, and kind of wrap up so many wonderful professional and personal relationships.

Many of you remember when I started right out of veterinary college in 1990. For some of you I have cared for successive generations of your feline friends. With many of you we would spend most of the time in the exam room talking about our families and travels and other things before discussing your cat’s needs and concerns. I have had the joy of welcoming kittens into your homes and then years later arriving at the sacred end of life journeys when they become elderly or sick. I have cried with you and laughed with you. I am forever grateful for your confidence in me and your kindness toward me. My heart is filled with gratitude.

And, finally, everyone is asking me what I am going to do next. Honestly, besides some travel and some rest, I am not sure yet, but I am excited to see what might lie ahead.

I am leaving you in good hands with excellent doctors and a kind and talented staff who work tirelessly every day to try to make your and your cat’s experience a good one at the Chicago Cat Clinic.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Dr. John Nordwall
