Training the Untrainable
“Go fetch…roll over… play dead”. Such phrases are commonly associated with dogs; say that to a cat and at best you’ll receive an apathetic stare. Why are dogs expected to know tricks but cats get a free pass? No longer, I say! It’s about time these kitties got some homeschooling. My girlfriend and I decided to do the unthinkable….train the untrainable.
Many of you will have heard of Pavlov’s dog. Pavlov would ring a bell before serving his dog food. Eventually Pavlov’s dog would salivate from just hearing the bell, even if there was no food. This “association training” was the basis for our work. Instead of a bell, we had a simple clicker. Every time the cat did something we approved of, we would make an audible “Click” and give them a treat. If it works (in theory), how hard could it be? The next few blog entries will cover how my girlfriend and I try(ed) to train our cats.
