Rescue Spotlight: ALIVE Rescue
ALIVE Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, founded in March 2008 as a rescue and safe haven for animals. From March 2008 through November of 2012, they ran operations solely through the use of foster homes. In November of 2011, they signed a lease for a building (“the Little Barn”) in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago. For nearly one and a half years, they rehabbed and re-designed the original structure, preparing it to become their first adoption center. On May 5th, 2013, they opened The Little Barn, celebrating this accomplishment with dozens of donors, volunteers, and the animals they rescued. Since The Little Barn adoption center officially opened, they have been able to significantly increase the number of lives they save each year. Primarily, The Little Barn is used to house their more difficult dogs that need special training and handling. Each day they have a team of volunteers who come in to help with socialization, training, walking and caring for the animals that reside at “The Barn.”
The Little Barn provides glass-front suites, with blankets and bedding, for resident animals. Several times each day, the dogs go out to the “barnyard” for play and exercise. Cats live in “cat condos” where they climb and socialize with one another and retire to individual compartments when they want privacy.
On September 19, 2016, ALIVE Rescue converted The Little Barn into a Special Isolation Center for canine influenza exposed dogs.
They believe that their responsibility is first to the animals that are in local open-access shelters with a high probability of being euthanized. They primarily take in animals from shelters with high euthanasia rates in Chicago and the surrounding area. They follow through on their commitment that every animal deserves a full life by choosing to take in animals that other adoption organizations may overlook, including seniors, unpopular breeds, and pets with special needs.
ALIVE Rescue is an animal rescue that protects the lives and the rights of animals. We believe every animal has the right to a well-balanced, socialized and fulfilled life. We take on the responsibility to save, rehabilitate and place abandoned, abused and stray animals. We provide medical, behavioral and physical support for animals despite their age, health and/or breed. ALIVE Rescue promotes sustainable living and care giving by building awareness, appreciation and respect for all animals and the environment within our communities.
